The First Steps

Receiving the letter, Joćo Roberto d'Escragnolle became infected by the young sender“s enthusiasm, a 34 year-old Telegraph“s employee, full of idealism and dreams.

The day after, on June 29, 1922, he forwarded the letter to the "Petropolis Rostrum" newspaper, with a request of publication, letter that remained forgotten; and on July 12 d'Escragnolle sent a succint note to Joaquim: "Dear friend J. Santos. Last Saturday I sent your letter to the 'Rostrum'. I think it was mislaid. It would be good to come again to the matter. I would be more than happy if you could find two or three friends with the same intentions as yours. Who knows if we couldn“t get something? I have the intention of gathering people on the 14, at 2pm. d'Escragnolle"

On the June 27, 1922“s edition, the "Petropolis Rostrum" published the letter, preceded by the following comment written by the journalist-editor Mr. Alvaro Machado: "A HAPPY IDEA - Joaquim Santos, talented National Telegraph“s employee, working in this city, had an idea worthy of support, that we are becoming public. The distinguished young fellow reminds us the foundation, in Petropolis, of a literary association, where thinkers would gather to exchange ideas, to recite verses or lectures, and, above all, to encourage the studious youth to look for it with the desire of spreading their works and intelligences. Joaquim Santos outlined his idea, in the attached letter addressed to Joćo Roberto d'Escragnolle, this great spirit able of all undertakings - endless blue fantasies“dreamer."

Euphory and success

Joćo Roberto d'Escragnolle, reading the letter in the "Rostrum", in the same morning of the publication, wrote a note to Joaquim Gomes dos Santos: "Dear Friend Mr. J. Santos, have you already read today“s "Rostrum"? Very encouraging for the case. I have just written to Alvaro Machado thanking him for it. Will it be possible to take it ahead now?

See your mate and let us proceed. I am preparing a special issue dedicated to the aviation men. Would my friend send me a few lines about the subject? Yours, d ' Escragnolle." Joaquim“s mate, quoted by d“Escragnolle in the note, is Reynaldo Chaves. Immediately the support manifestations started, through the Petropolitan press“articles authors, Raul Serrano ("Around a Happy Idea") and Reynaldo Chaves ("Things and Habits").

Comments spark the enthusiasm, and Joćo Roberto d“Escragnolle distributes, on August 2, 1922, a note card with the following sayings: "On the Press Center headquarters, at 762- upper floor, 15 de Novembro Avenue, will be held a meeting, tomorrow at 8pm, to discuss about the foundation of a new literary association. The referred meeting“s organizers ask for the attendance of everyone who is interested in the subject."

Invitation distributed by d'Escragnolle for the Association foundation meeting.
